Title: Symbolic dynamics from combinatorics to group theory

Abstract: Symbolic dynamics was originally developed
as a tool for studying classical smooth dynamical
systems such as the geodesic flow. It turned out
to have many strong connections with other areas
such as combinatorics and group theory. I will
explain, ab initio,  what is symbolic dynamics and
what are some of these connections.
