The subject of tilings of planar regions has evolved rapidly from a
collection of recreational problems to a well-developed area of research,
with connections to group theory, topology, probability, physics, and
more. We shall present some of the interesting concepts and results in
this area, from Thurston's height functions and tileability algorithm,
through flip connectivity and the distributive lattice structure, to Pak's
tile invariants and other recent developments.
