General information

  • Excursions will be on Tuesday, June 17th. Starting at 13:30, after the special sessions.
  • Busses will take the participants back to the Ramat-Gan and Tel-Aviv hotels, and then to the university.
  • We plan to hold 2-3 excursions out of the four options below, depending on the number of participants. The options with least number of potential participants will not take place.
  1. Northen Israel along coastal road

    • Pick up at Bar-Ilan University.
    • Drive North along the coastal road to Caesaria to visit the ancient Herodian port city (1st century Bce) and crusader city. Caesarea National Park, harbor and beach amazing antiquities. Its Roman theater, immense stadium and sophisticated port recall Caesarea's status as the country's Roman capital and its role in Jewish and Christian history.
    • Via the Carmel mountain to the highest point panorama at the Carmelite Monastery of Muchraqa.
    • Via the Druze villages of the Carmel to Haifa.
    • Panorama of the world heritage Hanging Bahá'í gardens of Haifa.
    • Drive back along the coast.
Weather note: In case of hot weather this excursion will be the most challenging since it is largely outside, but there will be opportunities to cool off in the Mediterranean sea.
  2. Jerusalem

This day will focus on the history of Jerusalem visiting the Old city.
    • Pick up at Bar-Ilan University.
    • Drive to Jerusalem via route 443 to understand some of the political issues Israel and the Palestinians are debating.
    • On to Mount Scopus and the Mount of Olives for panorama orientation.
    • Walk down to the Garden of Gethsemane. Tour the church of all nations.
    • Drive via the Ophel and Mt. Zion to the Jaffa gate.
    • Enter via the Jaffa Gate and tour the highlights of the Old City:
      • The Suq,
      • The Church of the Holy Sepulcher
      • The Christian Quarter
      • The Cardo, The Jewish Quarter
      • Go to the western Wall,
      • Via the Muslim Quarter to the Damascus gate were you will meet the bus.
      • According to time - head for dinner (On own) or to the Machane Yehuda Suq for some color, flavor, and Jerusalem atmosphere.
    • Back to Tel-Aviv
Weather note: In case of hot weather this excursion should be fine, unless there is a heat wave (which occurs occasionally).
  3. South to Maresha and Beit Guvrin

This excursion is a good part of the time to caves which are underground, so would be good if the weather is hot. It is quite physical and requires much walking and (optional) squeezing through small openings, which might entail some dirt on one's clothes.
    • Drive East to the foothills of the Judean mountains.
    • Drive south to the Elah Valley - the battle of David and Goliath.
    • This is the wine route of Israel - possible stop at a boutique winery.
    • Head to the ancient Tel Maresha to visit an amazing maze of hideaway caves and dwellings from the Roman period.
    • Drive back to Tel Aviv via the coastal road.
    • Possible dinner en route.
  4. Tour of Tel Aviv

    Canncelled due to insufficient interest.
